These athletes, once at the top of their game on the world stage, all received severe penalties due to testing positive for banned substances. Some of which, perhaps might have been averted if more care was put in choosing the properly vetted sports nutrition products.

Nesta Carter
Olympic Sprinter- Usain Bolt’s Teammate

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt has lost one of his nine Olympic gold medals as ordered by the IOC after team mate Nesta Carter was found guilty of doping at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Re-tests of Carter’s sample revealed the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine, which Carter contests might be linked to brand name protein and creatine sports nutrition products made widely available in health stores and online. “He therefore did not believe that these supplements could contain prohibited substances”, says Carter’s Coach Mr. Stephen Francis.

Jamaica’s 4×100 metres relay team would not be forced to give back their 2008 olympic gold medals had Carter had chosen an NSF Certified for Sport product to include in his supplementation.

Jessica Hardy
Team USA Swimmer

Then 21 years old, Team USA swimmer Jessica Hardy never made it to the  2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.  Hardy tested positive for a banned anabolic agent at the Olympic Trials and received a two-year ban from competition.. Hardy and her coach blamed possible tainted sports nutrition products and dietary supplements as the source of her doping violation.  Hardy’s case and unfortunate demise  is another reminder that competitive athletes need to be aware of what they are consuming and only take NSF Certified for Sport supplements.

Jon Bones Jones
MMA Champion

After a rapid rise to superstardom in the MMA ranks, the former light-heavyweight champ had a very public fall from grace. After a highly publicized hit and run incident, Jones’ comeback match to regain the title never happened as the New York native tested positive for banned substances and was pulled from the card only a few days from fight night.
Jones blames the positive test on a tainted male enhancement supplement that is readily available over the counter. A better alternative for most might be a testosterone booster that relies on naturally derived herbs instead of synthetic blends.

Diego Maradona
Soccer Legend

During the 1994 World Cup Tournament, Argentinian superstar Diego Maradona was sent home and removed from tournament competition after testing positive for 5 variants of Ephedrine.

With the glory days of leading Argentina to the World Cup title in 1986 well behind him, off field controversies often overshadowed Maradona’s greatness. In preparation for the 1994 World Cup, Maradona was out of shape and overweight. Allegedly turning to Ephedrine based diet and fat burning supplements, Maradona was able to drop a few pounds heading into the initial group matches. Only to receive the FIFA suspension for testing positive for the banned substance. Herbal weight loss & diet products can provide the metabolic kickstart as an alternative to using the banned substance of ephedrine.

Maria Sharapova
Tennis Champion

Once the world’s highest paid female athlete, Sharapova revealed she had been taking ‘Meldonium’ since 2006 following a failed drug test from the 2016 Australian Open.

Though not added to the banned substances list until 2016, Meldonium is used to treat ischaemia, which is a lack of blood flow to parts of the body, particularly in cases of angina or heart failure. Sharapova claims she was taking the drug for 10 years due to magnesium deficiencies and other  family related illnesses.

Athletes using meldonium can gain enhanced performance by way of carrying more oxygen to muscle tissue. Sports nutrition products with beta alanine can accomplish similar enhanced performance thanks to the vasodilation of blood vessels allowing for greater blood flow to working muscles.
