- Sitting less and walking more can contribute to overall fitness if there really isn’t much time to exercise.
For some, exercise may be a priority during the holiday season. For others, it might be what slips. Either way, when you’re traveling for the holiday season, getting something in becomes a bit more difficult. Here are 4 tips to help you stay active when you’re on holiday.
1. Plan Ahead
- Search for places you can walk, run, or take a short hike. Some parks have fitness equipment installed.
- Check in to a hotel or an apartment with an exercise facility inside the building (or nearby).
- Search to see if your gym has partner facilities where you are traveling
- If staying with the folks or family, make a call and ask if they have any fitness equipment to use.
- Make a list of group activities with friends or family such as playing indoor sports or simply taking a long bicycle ride around the city or town.
- Conjure a list of easy-to-do workouts that don’t need much equipment or floorspace. Basements and empty garages can be great make-shift gyms with the right exercise and a little bit of creativity.
2. Bring portable exercise tools
Some examples of easily portable tools include:
- Jump ropes
- A pair of running shoes
- Resistance bands
- The internet – search quick HIIT exercises online. You might be surprised with what you can find.
3. Get outside
If you’re in a new place, you might already be touring the local sites. This counts. See what other local parks are available to walk or bike through. If you’re staying with family and friends, a walk, bike ride or run through their neighborhood is always a good option.
4. Offer to help with housework
If staying with family or friends, why not offer to help around the house? Some examples of more intensives chores include: ishoveling snow, chopping wood, raking leaves, general house cleaning, helping with the dishes, or simply rearranging furniture.
5. Sit less
Studies suggest sitting for long periods of time can slow the metabolism down, can contribute to poor posture, and even increase the risk of back injuries. The best way to offset the side effects of sitting down too much is to stand more and increase movement with some of the tips above.
Fitness enthusiasts can try standing up while texting, being on the phone, when eating lunch or drinking coffee.
While the holidays can make it more difficult to stay active, a little creativity and planning ahead can go a long way.
